Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s chief apologist, Isham Jalil, told an interview yesterday that no prime minister can remain in office without the support of UMNO grassroots.
Citing the case of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Isham said the former premier only lasted 22 months because UMNO grassroots did not approve of him’
“There is no prime minister who will ever survive without Umno’s base (of supporters) and grassroots.
“Not even Dr Mahathir Mohamad could remain in office after Pakatan Harapan’s 22 months in power, because he was disliked by Umno’s grassroots members.
“The same also applied to Muhyiddin Yassin, who only lasted 17 months,” he claimed.
Seriously, what is this fellow smoking?
When Mahathir resigned as prime minister, it had nothing to do with UMNO grassroots or the grass growing in Timbuktu that someone may be delivering to Isham’s house.
On the contrary, Mahathir resigned because he cherished the mandate of the people, who supported his mission to bring down the Kleptocratic, scandal ridden and corrupt UMNO regime.
Mahathir promised the people that he would represent Pakatan Harapan as Prime Minister in the event the coalition won the 14th general election.
However, when PPBM betrayed him and teamed up with the Kleptocrats along with several PKR MPs, Pakatan Harapan’s majority immediately shifted towards a new alliance led by Perikatan Nasional.
Perikatan Nasional seemed open to the idea of a Mahathir-led government, and Mahathir could easily have opted to stay on as prime minister.
However, he is a man of principle, not greed.
He understood well that the people wanted Pakatan Harapan in power, not Perikatan Nasional or Barisan Nasional.
He also knew that it would be a betrayal of the highest order to team up with the very Kelptocrats he swore to bring down.
It is for this reason, above all, that he stepped down as Prime Minister.
Clearly, it had nothing to do with the lack of UMNO grassroots support. Seriously, what is this Isham fellow smoking?
