Pribumi Bersatu Youth chief, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman today clarified that the party wing has yet to make an official stand on whether to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).
Giving official recognition to UEC was part of Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto for last year’s general election.
KUALA LUMPUR: Pribumi Bersatu Youth chief, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman today clarified that the party wing has yet to make an official stand on whether to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).
Syed Saddiq said the strongly-worded objection against UEC, penned earlier by an executive committee member of the party wing was the latter’s personal view.
“This is his personal view. Not Armada’s (Pribumi Bersatu youth wing). Will wait for the matter (recognition for UEC) to go to the Cabinet for approval,” wrote Syed Saddiq in his media Whatsapp group following an inquiry over Ashraf’s statement.
The committee member, Mohd Ashraf Mustaqim Badrul Munir is in charge educational affairs.
In his statement, Ashraf called upon Malaysians to object against any form of recognition for the UEC, which is the main Chinese high school certificate, arguing that by doing so will strengthen Malaysia’s national education system.
Ashraf’s outburst was due to the latest Education Ministry’s recruitment drive for a foundation-level teacher training programme that was opened for UEC holders, which he deemed to be a tacit recognition of the UEC.
Such recruitment drive, which was also opened to holders of Islamic school certificates started in 2011 with the aim of improving the teaching quality in Chinese language and Islamic education.
“We need to collectively mold our future generation in a single education system that reflects our nation’s agenda. Let us reject whatever form of recognition for the UEC because that is not part of our national education policy,” Ashraf wrote in a statement.
