KOTA BARU: Pas is not against PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Instead, the Islamic party said it backs Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad because he is not only the prime minister but also the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman.
Deputy Pas spiritual leader and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said this was the reason behind Pas and its members backing Dr Mahathir.
“At the moment, Pas has given its support to Dr Mahathir and whether we (Pas) are trying to act against Anwar or not, is not an issue.
“As party members, we will follow whatever the decision is made by our president.
“Our president recently agreed to give undivided support to Dr Mahathir as he is the leader of PH and Anwar should wait for the transition of power,” he said during his weekly Friday ceramah here today.
Pas recently reiterated its stand to continue supporting the leadership of Dr Mahathir.
This is in recognition of his efforts to continue bringing development to the country amid political uncertainties.
Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang gave assurances that 18 MPs from the party which is now part of Muafakat Nasional with Umno would back Dr Mahthir, in the event the prime minister faced a vote of no-confidence or any move to support such a motion, in the event it was raised in the Dewan Rakyat.
Hadi, who is Marang MP, had said that Pas’s stand was for Dr Mahathir to stay as the prime minister until the end of his term.
On another note, Ahmad welcomed the move by Dr Mahathir to reshuffle the cabinet, which he said was a right move.
“The move (to reshuffle the cabinet) is his right and as far as Pas is concerned, the time is also right for the prime minister to do so.
“We can see that the majority of the cabinet ministers nowadays are not helping the government and, therefore, Dr Mahathir must form a new cabinet for the country’s future,” he said.
He said a cabinet reshuffle would also enable Dr Mahathir to resolve the problems faced by the country, including the dissatisfaction of the younger generation who are unhappy with the government’s unfulfilled promises.
“The recent loss in the Tanjung Pial by-election was also a signal that the time has come for the government to change its cabinet,” he said.
