DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has denied the existence of a political cooperation between Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), Umno and Pas through Pakatan Nasional as claimed by various quarters.

According to a source, UMNO had agreed in principle to work with PPBM but would only issue a statement on the matter together with its newfound partner, PAS, under the banner of the newly formed Muafakat Nasional alliance.

Terms of a deal that’s currently being worked is said to include the formation of a new coalition dubbed “Pakatan Nasional” (or Barisan Baru Nasional, as one or two insist) without the participation of the “Lim cartel” and the “Anwar camp.”

There is no way Guan Eng could be aware of all this unless he himself is involved in discussions, which obviously isn’t the case since those intending to participate in the formation of a new coalition do not want him around.

PETALING JAYA: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has denied the existence of a political cooperation between Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), Umno and Pas through Pakatan Nasional as claimed by various quarters.

“The prime minister himself has denied it, and today he confirmed himself that Pakatan Nasional does not exist.

“It is not true, and don’t believe what others say,” he reportedly said at the Chinese New Year open house hosted by Penang Customs Department here today.

However, nobody asked him.

The reporters may have, I’m not sure, but the fact that he has twice harped on the issue – the first being when he chided the Star for publishing ‘fake news’ – is a demonstration of his fear that a new coalition may be on the cards.

Guan Eng was not present during meetings between Datuk Seri Haji Abdul Hadi Awang and Mahathir, as well as meetings involving UMNO and PAS.

He did, however, refer to a statement by Mahathir yesterday where the Prime Minister denied that he invited Umno to form Pakatan Nasional.

However, Mahathir has gone on record to deny many things he never really meant. In 1998, two days before he sacked Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, he told reporters that things were moving along just fine between him and his then deputy and that Anwar was in fact the Prime Minister designate.

If indeed there is a new coalition agenda, all parties concerned are naturally going to be tight lipped about it until the day the coalition emerges.

A well placed source described the UMNO supreme council meeting on Friday as “heated and inconclusive” even though Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin denied that the issue of UMNO working with PPBM was discussed.

According to the source, UMNO had agreed in principle to work with PPBM but would only issue a statement on the matter together with its newfound partner, PAS, under the banner of the newly formed Muafakat Nasional alliance.

Terms of a deal that’s currently being worked out is said to include the formation of a new coalition dubbed “Pakatan Nasional” (or Barisan Baru Nasional, as one or two insist) without the participation of the “Lim cartel” and the “Anwar camp.”

There is no way Guan Eng could be aware of all this unless he himself is involved in discussions, which obviously isn’t the case since those intending to participate in the formation of a new coalition do not want him around.
