Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak said former Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz was aware of the funds in his bank account prior to the 13th General Election (GE13).
He said if the BNM then, had some doubts about the source of the funds, he expected them to inform him.
But, according to him, nothing of that sort happened, leading him to assume that it was fine.
KUALA LUMPUR: If there had been doubts on the source of the RM2.6 billion in former Premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s bank account, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) made no mention of it then.
In making this claim, Najib said former Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz was aware of the funds in his bank account prior to the 13th General Election (GE13).
Speaking to Malaysiakini in an exclusive interview, Najib said he had assumed everything was fine when BNM did not say anything on the funds.
He said if the BNM then, had some doubts about the source of the funds, he expected them to inform him.
“But nothing of that sort happened. So I assumed all along that it was fine,” he was quoted as saying by the newsportal.
As had been reported before, Najib continued to stress that the RM2.6 billion was a donation from a member of the Saudi royal family and that he had returned US$620 million from the donation to the donor after GE13.
The claim made by Najib is not new as the matter was highlighted previously by former Special Affairs Department (JASA) director Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi.
In 2016, Puad alleged that the Zeti granted permission for the money to be deposited into Najib’s account.
This, Puad reasoned was because to deposit the money into Najib’s personal account would require BNM approval which was why the matter was discussed with the central bank’s governor
