There have been reports of a crisis brewing in Melaka barely four months into a new state administration, put in place due to a similar crisis that triggered the 21st November 2021 state election.

Previously, the battle was between former Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron and State UMNO Chairman Ab Rauf Yusoh, each leading a camp of supporters comprising state assemblymen and party division and branch leaders.

This time, the rift is allegedly between current Melaka chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali and Yusoh, with sources claiming that Rauf is side-lining Sulaiman when making party related decisions and may be dissatisfied that Sulaiman was named Chief Minister.

According to a news report, Sulaiman denied he had problems with Ab Rauf, saying they enjoyed a cordial relationship.

“It was UMNO vs UMNO previously, and it is still UMNO vs UMNO now,” the source claimed.

In the previous iteration, Idris was said to be eying the Chief Minister’s post, a post he held prior to Barisan Nasional’s defeat during the 14th general election.

According to a source, Idris was dissatisfied that UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had offered the post to Sulaiman following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan led state government on the 3rd of March 2020.

As a result, Idris allegedly co-architected the collapse of the Melaka State Government with the help of two UMNO assemblymen, while Zahid took advantage of the situation to test waters by pushing for a state election.

However, a news report claims that Sulaiman denied he had problems with Rauf, saying they enjoyed a cordial relationship.

He (Sulaiman) had been asked about a challenge by Ayer Keroh assemblyman Kerk Chee Yee of DAP who said all 21 BN assembly members in Melaka should voice their support for Sulaiman as the Chief Minister to prove that his administration was stable.

Kerk, a former executive councillor, quoted a news report about internal squabbling in Melaka Umno, in which Sulaiman was allegedly to be facing a power struggle with policy decisions being made without his consent.

Last November, after the state elections, Rauf had been accused of trying to lobby top party leaders to be named for the Melaka chief minister’s post. He was absent when Sulaiman was sworn in .

BN sources told FMT that the coalition was aware of Rauf’s unhappiness but said “everything is under control”. One party source said there was no threat at all to the new government with all BN elected representatives committed to ensuring political stability in the state.

Ab Rauf had since denied talk of any turmoil in the newly-formed state government, saying Sulaiman had the backing of all Umno division chiefs.
