Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said he did not support the fight and struggles championed by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Without ascertaining the authenticity of the letter allegedly issued by him asking the Home Ministry to remove LTTE as a terrorist group during the Pakatan Harapan administration, Dr Mahathir said just because the movement was labelled as terrorist group in other countries, it did not mean Malaysia should also follow suit.
“Let me explain here… why should we look for problems. If there is no problem, why we look for one? And the problem takes place in Sri Lanka, not in our country.
“We do not take that kind of action unless they (LTTE) creates problems in Malaysia,” he said.
PUTRAJAYA: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said he did not support the fight and struggles championed by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Dr Mahathir cited Hamas, which had been labelled as terrorist groups by the United States (US), as an example.
“It does not mean I support LTTE. In fact, I do not support LTTE. As such, I do not say Hamas is a terrorist group. It was the US and other countries that categorised Hamas as terrorist.
“If Hamas is a terrorist, then explain why do I meet with their leader Ismail Haniyeh to discuss about their struggles?
“He is my friend. Why would I call him a terrorist?” he told reporters when asked if he had issued such a letter asking the Home Ministry to remove LTTE as a terrorist group when he was the prime minister during the previous PH administration.
A portal claimed that Dr Mahathir, in the letter dated Feb 12, had asked the Home Ministry to remove LTTE as a terrorist group.
“Let me explain here… why should we look for problems. If there is no problem, why we look for one? And the problem takes place in Sri Lanka, not in our country.
“We do not take that kind of action unless they (LTTE) creates problems in Malaysia,” he said.
