Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) has questioned Umno’s ability to fulfil all promises made in the 2023 Budget.

This, the coalition chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said, as the government lacked funds, is corrupt and inefficient at implementing projects.

Dr Mahathir said that were many ways to reduce costs but were not being practised.

“At the same time, the value of ringgit fell, making debt payments in ringgit increase, as well as the imported costs,” he said in a Facebook posting today.

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) has questioned Umno’s ability to fulfil all promises made in the 2023 Budget.

This, the coalition chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said, as the government lacked funds, is corrupt and inefficient at implementing projects.

“During (Datuk Seri) Najib (Razak’s) time, the Umno government failed in its financial management.

“It was Umno that borrowed RM42 billion using the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) fund.

“Now, paying interest alone requires billions of ringgit every year, with the principal debt not being paid.

“Often the allocation for development is used to pay interest on loans.

“This has caused development not being implemented due to lack of funds. Moreover, the cost increases due to corruption,” he said.

He revealed that the previous government’s debt was never more than RM1 billion.

“At the same time, the value of ringgit fell, making debt payments in ringgit increase, as well as the imported costs,” he said in a Facebook posting today.

The incumbent Langkawi MP said the 2023 Budget tabled on Oct 7 was clearly meant for election.

“The budget looks good, but if the implementation is not efficient, despite the allocation, it cannot bring the promised outcome.

“Furthermore, the opposing parties were not even given the right to discuss the provisions given to all levels of society in the budget.

“GTA, which has not been registered yet, had no choice but to support, because if it failed to do so, the people will be disappointed and reject the coalition.”

Dr Mahathir said although GTA accepted the budget, there were many changes and additions need to be made to the proposed financial allocation.

“InsyaAllah, GTA can implement the budget, especially in terms of aid for the people, should Umno not become the government and GTA is given the victory and becomes the government.”
