Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim agreed that the transition of power should be conducted without causing too much strain to the country.

“He (Anwar) said that he understands the problems we currently face and that there shouldn’t be too much tension (in the transition of power), with people making all kinds of suggestions like the date of the transition,” Dr Mahathir said.

He said also that both agreed to focus on economic development and making preparations towards Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Summit next year.

On Monday, Dr Mahathir said he didn’t know if the country was ready for a transition of power, adding it was premature to assume that Pakatan Harapan’s defeat in the Tanjung Piai by-election was due to the ambiguity surrounding the timeline for him to hand over the reins to a successor

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim agreed that the transition of power should be conducted without causing too much strain to the country.

Anwar had earlier met with the premier at the Perdana Leadership Foundation to discuss on several matters pertaining to the transition of power.

“He (Anwar) said that he understands the problems we currently face and that there shouldn’t be too much tension (in the transition of power), with people making all kinds of suggestions like the date of the transition,” Dr Mahathir said when asked what was discussed during the meeting.

Meanwhile in a statement today, Anwar confirmed having a 30-minute meeting with Dr Mahathir.

“Firstly, the stand on the transition of power, as what was agreed previously by the Pakatan Harapan coalition and Dr Mahathir, remains unchanged.

“I have also expressed that the transition of power must be done peacefully and in order, within a reasonable period of time. It must also be agreed by all,” Anwar said.

He said also that both agreed to focus on economic development and making preparations towards Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Summit next year.

On Monday, Dr Mahathir said he didn’t know if the country was ready for a transition of power, adding it was premature to assume that Pakatan Harapan’s defeat in the Tanjung Piai by-election was due to the ambiguity surrounding the timeline for him to hand over the reins to a successor.

This, he said, would be done when the time comes.
