PETALING JAYA: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) Johor pledged to stand firm as an important component of Perikatan Nasional (PN) in leading the state government, a news report read.
According to the report, the pledge was made today following a meeting with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in Kuala Lumpur and a decree by the Sultan of Johor, both yesterday.
“All the assemblymen will abide by the Sultan of Johor’s order to jointly ensure that the interests of the people are upheld and, at the same time, strengthen the state Bersatu chapter to be the state government’s pillar,” a statement read.
It is said that former Johor mentri besar Datuk Osman Sapian was absent from the meeting, attended by 10 Bersatu assemblymen and Pemanis assemblyman Dr Chong Fat Full.
The report further states that Muhyiddin received full support as PPBM president following the party’s decision to annul former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s membership.
“Johor Bersatu also looks forward to Muhyiddin’s achievements throughout the country in addressing the economic and social issues facing the people as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“In conjunction with the meeting, the Johor Bersatu assemblymen also presented T-shirts with the slogan Ikut Nasihat Abah; Kita Mesti Menang (‘Follow Abah’s advice; we will surely win’) as a show of support for Muhyiddin’s leadership,” read the statement.
Yesterday, PKR Member of Parliament Hassan Abdul Karim reportedly said today that the ruler of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim, lacks absolute power to dissolve the Johor State Legislative Assembly.
This was in response to a decree by the ruler that he would not hesitate to dissolve the state assembly in the event another power struggle occurred.
According to Hassan, Article 23(2) of the Johor Constitution which gives the Sultan power to “prorogue or dissolve” the state assembly has to be read together with Article 7(1) of the state constitution, which states that the ruler shall act “in accordance with the advice of the state executive council” in performing his constitutional functions.
Prior to that, Johor Pakatan Harapan issued a statement saying it respected Sultan Ibrahim’s decree in accordance with principles of constitutional monarchy.
“Johor PH also expresses its commitment to the practice of parliamentary democracy and the constitutional monarchy, which is the backbone of our state and country.
“Johor PH will always adhere to these principles in dealing with any issues and the current political situation,” it said in a joint statement signed by Johor Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) chairman Aminolhuda Hassan, state PKR chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh and state DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong.
