It’s too late Isham, the damage is done

“Who is to say that Mohamad Hasan was not tasked this time around with putting a spoke in Najib’s wheel, so that Zahid can remain president in case the Registrar of Society forces UMNO to hold party elections this year?”

I was puzzled by Isham Jalil’s reaction towards Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan’s recent “no holds barred” interview with Asia Times, which has been all the buzz in social media of late.

According to Isham, Mohamad was merely preparing himself for the worst-case scenario in Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s corruption trial and did not necessarily want the former prime minister to be imprisoned.

Isham pointed out that the question posed by the Asia Times journalist to Mohamad was speculative – namely, what if Najib were to be imprisoned.

“This does not mean that he wants Najib to be incarcerated,” Isham said.

But here’s the thing – I, too, listened to the audio recording, as did many others who I had the opportunity to discuss the matter with.

And here’s the result – everyone seems to agree that there is no way of confirming if Mohamad “was preparing himself for the worst-case scenario” or if he was being candid about his desire to see Najib jailed.

Mohamed would surely have known that telling any journalist that “Najib should go to jail” would be akin to committing political suicide.

So, it’s only fair to surmise, that had he been sincere, he would have had the sense to express, in no uncertain terms, that his response to Asia Times was within context of the journalist’s question and not expressive of his innermost desires.

But Mohamad did no such thing.

So, who is Isham to say that Mohamad does not want to see Najib jailed?

Of course, many are inclined to believe that Mohamad did mean well and was merely using Najib to highlight a case in point – that anyone seeking a Royal Pardon would first have to be imprisoned.

Under the circumstances, it wasn’t really necessary for Isham to come to Mohamad’s defense, because, having done so only makes one believe that Mohamad is indeed against Najib.

Yes, it is entirely possible that Mohamad turned against Najib and deliberately spoke to Asia Times in such a way, that his comments would always be “open to interpretation” and ‘retractable’ should he decide to make a U-Turn.

Then, after the interview was published, Najib instructed his lackeys to perform damage control, which is why you have the likes of Isham Jalil and Puad Zarkashi issuing all sorts of funny statements.

Due to the pressure exerted by these lackeys, Mohamad – being the fickle minded person I’m told he is – denied ever saying that he wanted Najib to go to jail.

Maybe that’s what happened.

I mean, it’s not as if Mohamad was never involved in a plot against an UMNO leader.

Not long after the 14th general election, I exposed a plot hatched by Najib’s camp to topple Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and how Mohamad was tasked to discuss leadership transition with Zahid.

However, Mohamad chickened out.

So who is to say that Mohamad was not tasked this time around with putting a spoke in Najib’s wheel, so that Zahid can remain president in case the Registrar of Society forces UMNO to hold party elections this year?
