PETALING JAYA: A news report read that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has not identified any MP that has the majority support among MPs to be the prime minister, Istana Negara said today.
“Istana Negara will contact the leaders of political parties with representatives in the Dewan Rakyat, to give an opportunity to them to present nominations of Dewan Rakyat members as future Prime Minister,” the Comptroller of the Royal Family and Household Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin reportedly said in a statement today.
On Thursday, Interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said a special Dewan Rakyat sitting would be convened on the 2nd of March 2020 to determine who would be the next Prime Minister.
According to a daily, Mahathir said the Agong met Members of Parliament because he wanted them to make their stand individually.
“The King, as you know, has asked all the members of Parliament to make a statement because they had made a statutory declaration… But the King is not sure and that he wants them (the MPs) to make their statement in front of him,” he said.
Mahathir added that if the Dewan Rakyat failed to determine who should be prime minister, a snap election would be called.
