The move to record statements from several politicians of late was not due to pressure from any quarters including political parties, said Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.

“We are not being forced by any quarters. I give my assurance and I will not allow my men to put pressure against any political group or party.

“Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has ordered me, as an IGP, not to suppress opposition political parties and politicians,” he said after attending a ceremony to posthumously promote Corporal Safwan Muhammad Ismail to the rank of Sergeant at the Northern Brigade of the General Operations Force, Ulu Kinta here today.

Hamid said that he would never allow his men to use violence during the statement recording process and there was no issue of government misusing police power involving any political parties.

IPOH: The move to record statements from several politicians of late was not due to pressure from any quarters including political parties, said Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.

Safwan, 31, from the Kajang district police headquarters (IPD), was manning a Movement Control Order (MCO) roadblock at the Kajang-Seremban Expressway (Lekas) when was killed after being hit by a four-wheel-drive vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver on May 3.

Hamid said police would not detain politicians but only their statements were taken according to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) following police reports lodged by individuals.

“The Bukit Aman third-class investigation unit, which has been given the responsibility to investigate special cases that involve politicians, previously reviewed several reports lodged by certain individuals nationwide concerning political issues.

“We only follow SOPs, which is to call them (to record statement) and not to arrest them. We ask them several questions based on the police reports lodged (against them).

“We only take their statements and provide them with an opportunity to explain the real situation. We will not handcuff or torture them and the process (taking statement) is conducted in a relaxed environment,” he said.

Hamid said that he would never allow his men to use violence during the statement recording process and there was no issue of government misusing police power involving any political parties.
