British rock band The 1975’s performed more than just a concert in Sepang last night when vocalist Matty Healy performed a ‘gay kiss’ on stage and vented his frustration about laws against homosexuality.
The spectacle – a first in Malaysian history – comes not long after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim himself welcomed renowned British rock band Coldplay to perform here in November, despite protests by various groups concerned with the band’s pro-LGBT stance.
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is known to wave “Pride flags” on stage during concerts, a clear demonstration of its support towards LGBT rights.
Yesterday, The 1975’s main performer told the crowd that he didn’t see the point of a country telling people who they could have sex with.

Yesterday, The 1975’s main performer told the crowd that he didn’t see the point of a country telling people who they could have sex with.
In videos posted on social media, Healy was seen kissing bassist Ross MacDonald after giving a profanity-laden speech to the audience, in which he criticised the Malaysian government’s stance against homosexuality.
“I made a mistake. When we were booking shows, I wasn’t looking into it. I don’t see the f****** point… of inviting The 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with,” Healy said with a wine bottle in hand, as some young fans appeared to shout in approval.
“I don’t care anymore. If you push, I’m going to push back. I’m not in the f****** mood.
“You’re young people, and I’m sure a lot of you are gay and progressive,” he said.
He added that he had considered dropping out of the show in protest of Malaysia’s laws against homosexuality but later decided to go ahead.
“We said, ‘You know what? We can’t let the kids down because they’re not the government.’ …
“But, I’ve done this before. I’ve gone to a country where I don’t know what the f*** it is? Ridiculous. F***ing ridiculous to tell people what they can do with their that and that,” he said, pointing to his mouth and groin. “I’ll take your money. You can ban me, but I’ve done this before, and it doesn’t feel good, and I’m f***ed off.”
Fellow band member Ross MacDonald then walked over to Healy, where they locked lips.
Healy was criticised for kissing a male fan at a 2019 concert in the United Arab Emirates, which also has laws against homosexual acts, according to media reports.
The band still managed to finish their seventh song in Kuala Lumpur before abruptly ending their show, with Healy saying, “We just got banned from Kuala Lumpur, goodbye.”
Ironically, organisers of the Good Vibes Festival that hosted the band said the show will continue for the next two days.
“If you have a Friday single-day festival wristband, you will now be able to attend the festival on either Saturday or Sunday,” it reportedly said in a statement.
