Yesterday, reports of former Minister of Finance Lim Guan Eng’s son being arrested in Singapore went viral via WhatsApp, along with details of an alleged arrest made by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency in Kedah.

Detials were mixed, with one alleging that an ACP Azman bin Mohd Isa received RM615,000.00 from a man named Goh Choon Kim, said to be the Manager of Syarikat Global Tobacco Manufacturers (International) Sdn Bhd and owner of Vangohh Hotel.

According to another message, Lim was alleged to have flown to Singapore on the 29th of February 2020 after his son was detained at the Singapore International Airport for bringing in RM2 million worth of cash without proper documentation.

TTF hopes that the authorities will look into these claims and take necessary action if it is discovered that there are persons involved in the dissemination of fake news or exaggerations meant to sully the reputation of others, particularly since it involves the family member of a politician.

PETALING JAYA: Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador denies reports that the son of a political party’s senior leader was arrested in Singapore.

“The news is not true,” he reportedly told the Bernama news agency.

He was asked on a media report claiming that the son of a senior leader of a Malaysian political party was arrested at a Singapore airport in possession of undeclared sums of money amounting to RM2 million.

The report also stated that a man, bearing the title “Tan Sri”, was linked to the case.

The money was said to be an inducement not to charge Goh’s nephew, Goh Kim Heong, under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA).

The exact link between Goh and Guan Eng’s son in the allegation is hazy, although one message claims that Goh lodged a report alleging that he was conned by a group of people for millions of ringgits, where it is said that the group involved Guan Eng’s son, Clint Lim Way Chau.

According to another message, Lim was alleged to have flown to Singapore on the 29th of February 2020 after his son was detained at the Singapore International Airport for bringing in RM2 million worth of cash without proper documentation.

Initially, attempts by TTF to verify the authenticity of these claims proved futile, with some quarters insisting that the matter was overly exaggerated.

However, a very senior ranking police officer and a certain official from the MACC latter confirmed that Guan Eng’s son was never arrested – at least, not that they’re aware of – and claimed that news of the Malaysian authorities being on his case was completely false.

TTF hopes that the authorities will look into these claims and take necessary action if it is discovered that there are persons involved in the dissemination of fake news or exaggerations meant to sully the reputation of others, particularly if it involves family members of politicians.
