A news report has surfaced claiming that PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, are among speakers at the upcoming International Unity in Diversity Conference (IUDC) in Kuala Lumpur.

Question is, were Anwar and his ‘henchmen’ so unhappy with the recently concluded KL Summit that he had to get them to organise another conference in the ‘truest’ spirit of “Muslim brotherhood?”

Or is he trying to portray that he is just as internationally acclaimed and accomplished in the Muslim world? Perhaps he is trying to send a message to the Muslim world that he is more Muslim than Mahathir?

Will those who criticised Mahathir for ‘splitting Muslims by organising an Islamic Conference outside the OIC now criticise Anwar for “making a mockery of Muslim unity?”

SUBANG JAYA: A news report has surfaced claiming that PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, are among speakers at an upcoming event in Kuala Lumpur.

The International Unity in Diversity Conference (IUDC), as it is called, aims to discuss contemporary issues affecting the Muslim world, bringing in its wake an irony – what is so different between the IUDC and the recently concluded KL Summit (the summit)?

Mooted by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the summit was a gathering of Islamic leaders from the world over to discuss and exchange ideas about the issues revolving in the Muslim world, which is precisely what team Anwar is hoping to accomplish in a couple of days, barely a month after the summit drew its curtains.

Why the duplicity?

Why get the US-based International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), which Anwar himself co-founded, the Muslims Professional Forum (MPF) and the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) to assemble Muslim leaders all over again, when obviously, the majority of world leaders are not going to turn up?

Were Anwar and his ‘henchmen’ so unhappy with the summit that he had to get them to organise yet another conference in the ‘truest’ spirit of “Muslim brotherhood?”

Or is he trying to portray that he is just as internationally acclaimed and accomplished in the Muslim world as Mahathir is? Perhaps he wants to send a message to the Muslim world that he more Muslim than Mahathir?

A quick check with one or two sources revealed that no prominent world leader will be attending the upcoming ‘US-Anwar’ event.

Will those who criticised Mahathir for ‘splitting Muslims by organising an Islamic Conference outside the OIC circle now criticise Anwar for “making a mockery of Muslim unity?”
