PKR is using the uncertainty regarding Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM)’s leadership as excuse to justify Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s candidature as opposition leader.
This was made manifest today when Datuk Johari Abdul said Pakatan Harapan was uncertain about the position of Bersatu in the pact.
However, Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Marzuki Yahya has made it clear that Mahathir is still party chairman and cited Article 16.2 of the party’s constitution to define Mahathir’s role.
On the 25thof February 2020, Bersatu’s Supreme Council, which Muhyiddin is a member of, unanimously rejected Mahathir’s resignation as party chairman.

This was made manifest today when Datuk Johari Abdul said Pakatan Harapan was uncertain about the position of Bersatu in the pact.
“We don’t know what their position is in the first place and they are also in the midst of party elections. We don’t know whether Tun (Dr Mahathir Mohamad) and his camp or (Tan Sri) Muhyiddin (Yassin) and his would win.
“We can neither know what will be the outcome of this (tussle) nor can we tell for a fact whether they are still with PH.
“We don’t know who is who, Dr Mahathir said he is the chairman while Muhyiddin is saying something else,” he said.

On the 29thof February 2020, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that he had assumed the role of acting chairman following Mahathir’s resignation from the post.
In a statement, Muhyiddin said his move followed Mahathir’s resignation from the post on the 24thof February 2020.
However, Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Marzuki Yahya was quick to point out that Mahathir was still party chairman and cited Article 16.2 of the party’s constitution to define Mahathir’s role.
According to the party constitution, the person who chairs the party is the one with absolute power, not the party president.
On the 25thof February 2020, Bersatu’s Supreme Council, which Muhyiddin is a member of, unanimously rejected Mahathir’s resignation as party chairman.
The rejection was accepted by Mahathir who later confirmed confirmed that he still regarded himself to be the chairman of Bersatu.
Notwithstanding, PKR’s insistence that Anwar be made opposition leader is indicator that Anwar still wants Mahathir in Pakatan Harapan but also wants to be in control of the pact.
The excuse used by Johari Abdul to justify Anwar’s role as opposition leader makes no sense whatsoever, as if indeed Pakatan Harapan feels Bersatu is no longer with the pact or is uncertain of its status, PKR would have called for a meeting with Bersatu or Mahathir to clear the air.
