PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told Bloomberg that the act of discharging Riza Aziz on five counts of money laundering reflected badly on justice as it meant Malaysia failed to uphold the rule of law.
According to a report, Anwar said the case demonstrated the government’s lack of understanding and commitment towards legal reforms.
“It’s a very dangerous and disturbing precedent, it reflects the lack of understanding and commitment to actual legal reform.
“I think the issue must be reopened, the issue if this Riza Aziz must be reopened, and Malaysians will generally not accept the [DNAA],” he was quoted as saying.
Anwar said while efforts towards accelerating the legal processes would help, it would ultimately bear on the country’s laws.
“And we have failed in this regard, particularly in this recent Riza Aziz case,” he said.
In a separate video clip, Anwar said the case was akin to one stealing ten chickens but returning only one to call it even.
On Thursday, Riza, who happens to be the stepson of Datuk Seri Najib Razak, was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on five counts of money laundering involving US$248mil (RM1.25bil) linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram, who led the prosecution, read a statement to the court, saying Riza has made several representations since he was first charged.
“An agreement has been arrived at between the prosecution and the accused under the terms of which the Federal Government will receive a substantial sum running into several million ringgit.
“The sum have direct reference to the subject matter of the charges framed in this case,” he said.
