Although the organiser of a Barisan Nasional (BN) event which Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri attended has been slapped with a RM20,000 fine for violating the Standard-Operating Procedure (SOP), the damage is done.

Such a fine can easily be sponsored by a huge party like Barisan Nasional, and it is obvious that both Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Ismail Sabri knew the event flouted established SOPs but went ahead with the event anyway.

The damage is done in the sense that Najib and Ismail Sabri got to do what they went to Melaka for, i.e. to campaign, and RM20,000 is meagre compared to what Barisan Nasional would otherwise have spent had campaigning not been restricted.

On Nov 8, the Election Commission had issued stringent guidelines for the Melaka state election including a ban on ceramah, walkabouts and visiting people at their houses, to contain and prevent Covid-19 spreading.

The New Straits Times reported that the compound had been confirmed by a Jasin health district officer, who said the compound is believed to be issued to the BN head of the Asahan polling centre for an event organised at Medan Selera Selandar.

“The fine was issued to the organiser for failing to ensure social distancing. That’s all I can say,” he told reporters.

Ismail Sabri, who arrived around noon, received a warm welcome by 60 supporters and spent an hour meeting the locals.

Najib, who arrived earlier, was also seen having a meal with the BN Asahan candidate Fairul Nizam Roslan and top BN leaders.

Throughout the one hour session, locals flocked the food court to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister and Pekan MP.
